May the God of sunshine and gentle breezes, the God of rest and refreshment, be with you and yours these coming summer days!

WELL, IT’S ALMOST A WRAP!   Believe it or not, the year is almost at an end. Tomorrow is our last full day of school. We’ll be seeing 8th Graders according to their schedule and then the rest of our students from Grades 1-7 next Thursday when they return for our closing liturgy, awards, and report cards. Our Pre-K and Kindergarten will have their closing ceremonies tomorrow.  Friday, it’s off to Dorney Park! What a wonderful school and parish celebration day. We hope you enjoy it all from the water park to the wildest ride.

THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO!  From the Senior Stuffers to the smiling Pre-K cherubs, SCS is blessed. Our parishioners, school families, students, faculty, and staff all work together to make our school the special place that it is. So many of you model the mission of bringing Christ to others by your actions. Thank you!  Today is another example of that as our Seniors come in for this final envelope of the year and our Special Lunch Coordinators Debbie Murphy and Michelle Serrano organized this last lunch to support our 60 Mile Walk in the  fall.   We are blessed!

STAY TUNED!  Both the Church bulletins and our school website will be on-going sources of information for you over the summer regarding school news. You can always call school as well if you need to talk with one of us directly.  Our e-mail will be alive and well too! Bottom line—we’re here for you.

NO MORE LUNCHES TO PACK   Enclosed in this envelope is a letter sharing some information about the lunch program that we will be implementing in the fall. There is a sample menu on the back to give you an idea of what it’s like. If you would fill in the survey form at the bottom of the front page and send it back to us tomorrow, that will give us a general idea of how many families/children are interested. It does not commit you in any way but gives NDS and us a sense of the interest level. You’ll hear more about the program in the fall and it will officially begin in October—so almost no more lunches to pack! I revised it.

IF MY MATH’S RIGHT, EACH CHANCE TO WIN WILL ONLY COST YOU ABOUT 33 CENTS  For $20 you can buy a lottery ticket with 62 chances to win. What odds! Not only will you have fun at this one-time only event, but you will be contributing to our getting the kitchen redone over the summer. The lunch program we’re having provides us some equipment and so if St. Chris does the rest, we’ll have a brand-new facility that will benefit so many.

Check out the flier that chairperson Janet Dunphy has enclosed.  Yes, that’s our Janet who just stepped down as Home and School president. You know the saying, “It takes a busy woman…” Well, add dedicated to that, and that’s Janet!

LOOK ON THE BACK OF THE LOTTERY PAPER TO SEE HOW EASY SOME THINGS ARE  Chairperson Barb Worek has been busy all year with Campbell Soup labels, grocery store receipts, and other collectibles. Just by your saving them and sending them in, Barb redeems them to earn funding for SCS. It’s amazing how these monies can add up but they only will if you send them in. See how easy it is to do by checking out the flier.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS  We have much to celebrate with our 8th Graders and their accomplishments. Look for this news in the Church bulletin following graduation week. You too will be so proud of them.

Congratulations to our amazing track team led by head coach Alyssa Dunphy. Downpours of rain and mud didn’t stop the team for winning many medals at the Archdiocesan Championships at Franklin Field. We are very proud of them. Eighth Grader Pat Martinez has received many accolades from his coaches, track members and their parents, for an amazing year.  What special memories Pat and the other team member will have. We are grateful to Alyssa and the other coaches for all the time they have devoted to our students.

CRITICAL THINKING 101   Happy Summer Vacation!  That’s exactly what we wish each of you and the secret message in last week’s puzzle. Lots of you had no problem in figuring out the pattern and came up with the correct answer. Kaitlin Demchuk (8-25) had her winning entry drawn and so she will be receiving the final $10 Scrip of Choice certificate for this school year. Congratulations, Kaitlin! You’ll be reading a lot about her, by the way, when you read the 8th Grade bulletin news mentioned above.

MAY 31, 2006

…To you, Mother of the human family and of the nations, we confidently entrust the whole of humanity, with its hopes and fears. Do not let it lack the light of true wisdom. Guide its steps in the ways of peace. Enable all to meet Christ, the Way and the Truth and the Life. Sustain us, O Virgin Mary, on our journey of faith and obtain for us the grace of eternal salvation. O clement, O loving, O sweet Mother of God and our Mother, Mary. Amen.

“SUSTAIN US, O VIRGIN MARY, ON OUR JOURNEY OF FAITH…  As Mary’s month draws to a close, we pray to her especially for our families and for “…the whole of humanity, with its hopes and fears.”  We pray to Mary in a special way for Sister Michele and Father Phil who are continuing on their journeys of faith as they go forward to reach out to even more people as they live their vocations.  We know how many of our young people  Sister and Father Phil reached here by connecting with them in so many ways. We know too that they are hopeful that the seeds of service and caring that they planted in so many will continue to grow. They are leaving a great legacy for our young people. Let us keep it alive.

THE WINDOW FOR ORDERING SUMMER READING BOOKS IS CLOSING so if you’d like to order yours through school, please send in your order form and check this week. Clearly mark your envelope so that it gets to Mrs. Tremper who will see that the books get back to you.

OFFERTORY AND MONTHLY PLAN APPLICATIONS   For families to receive final report cards - $725 in offertory is necessary.  For 8th graders to participate in graduation activities - $780 is necessary. Anyone with questions in either regard should call Maryann Junod at the Parish Center 215-673-5177.

Families wishing to apply for the monthly payment plans can be pick up the forms at our school or parish offices. These completed forms must then be returned to parish office no later than June 30 to avoid processing  fee.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING AND THIS WEEK’S WEATHER….  makes our Home and School closing treat on Friday even more special. What’s more refreshing than water ice on a hot day? Water ice that’s free is even better! Our children will all get to enjoy this treat at Friday lunch for their dessert. Pre-K will do a 10:30  treat time.

NEXT WEEK BRINGS THE LAST SPECIAL LUNCH and it will be pizza! The proceeds of this last lunch are going towards sponsoring Mrs. Tremper and me on the 3 Day-60 Mile Breast Cancer Walk in which we will be participating again this fall. Send in the Special Lunch envelopes that you got last week by this Friday. Pizza and a drink are $2 and each additional slice is $1.  Remember that this is a no-change returned lunch—we each need to raise a minimum of $2200 to walk!  Thank you and know that we walk on behalf of all the women special to St. Christopher.

LIVING THAT ST. CHRIS SPIRIT  A special thanks goes out to Nancy Cavallo, a mom new to our school this year, but immediately into our spirit. Despite having surgery on one hand and so working with just her other one, Mrs. Cavallo created a wonderful gift basket for our fashion show.  Think what she’ll create next time with both hands available! Was that subtle enough?

ATTENTION ART CLUB MEMBERS SESSION 1 AND 2  Sister Michele needs your help to get ready for Vacation Bible School ! This Saturday, June 3rd from 10 AM to 1 PM in Holy Family Hall, we will be making decorations and props for this year’s Bible School Program which has the theme FIESTA! If you can help, please call Mrs. Gervino by Friday, June 2nd, at 215-673-0539. Hope that lots of you will be there!

PEOPLE AND EVENTS Alison Foley (2-3) has joined hearts with the select group of girls at SCS who have donated hair to “Locks of Love” to help other young people. “Locks of Love” is a group that makes wigs for young people who lose their hair to disease chief of which is cancer. We are very proud of you, Alison! This is truly a corporal work of mercy.

Our Track Team will be well represented this Saturday at the Archdiocesan Championships held at Franklin Field at U of Penn. These championships are reminiscent of the famous Penn Relays in excitement and intensity. SCS has some awesome representation. Be proud of yourselves, we certainly are.

We’ve heard great news about ’05 alum Brian McGuire at Holy Ghost Prep. Not only has Brian received two academic awards, he has also been given a $2000 scholarship for his sophomore year also based on his academic successes. His parents credit his teachers here at SCS for Brian’s foundation and motivation.

CRITICAL THINKING 101  Michael Apice (8-26) gets the $10 Scrip of Choice certificate for having his entry drawn. Examples of pronouns ranging from one to ten letters in length are I, we, she, they, whose, theirs, whoever, whomever, everybody, and yourselves. There are several more but this is a 1-10 sampling. Here’s our final puzzle of the season. When you’re doing it, remember that you’ll be one grade higher in September than you are now:

9-2-17-17-26   20-22-14-14-6-19   23-2-4-2-21-10-16-15!

MAY 24, 2006

Mother of the Redeemer, with great joy we call you blessed. In order to carry out His plan of salvation, God the Father chose you before the creation of the world. You believed in His love and obeyed His word. The Son of God desired you for His Mother when He became man to save the human race. You received Him with ready obedience and undivided heart…

THIS IS IT UNTIL NEXT TUESDAY!  Please remember that we’re starting a five day break beginning with Ascension Thursday tomorrow, a holy day of obligation, and ending with Memorial Day, a national holiday, on Monday. Enjoy the time with your families and send those cherubs back ready to be down to the serious business of bringing it altogether.  God bless America !

62 CHANCES FOR ONLY $20—SIGN ME UP!   Better yet, sign up for a bunch of tickets and sell them to family and friends. Proceeds of this lottery will go toward updating our kitchen from which our children get the most benefit. Check the enclosed Home and School flier for details.

YOUR MULTI-PURPOSE CALENDAR/SCHEDULE  should get you through the end of the school year with all the information you need in one place---which tests are on which days and which days school is in operation for your children are all there. As usual, students start back the Wednesday after Labor Day in September and the Church bulletin and  our school website will keep you updated about those details.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING!  At last week’s closing Home and School meeting, it was “the dawning of the Age of Aquarius” when several things came into convergence.  A nutritionist addressed the audience about our children and their eating habits. The statistics were unnerving and motivational to say the least. So that our children aren’t part of the negative stats, we announced the fall start of a lunchtime meal program from Nutritional Development Services. The meals are each balanced ones in terms of food groups and made to be appealing to young people from K up.  You’ll be getting more information about this program in September and will be able to see what it’s all about at our Back to School Nights. From the responses we’ve gotten so far, it’s long overdue.  Tied in to all of this in a convoluted way was our treasurer’s report with proceeds from Special Lunches and Sweets Days included. If those kinds of days really were special occasions in your children’s eating habits, think how much healthier they’d all be. Soda should be a once-in-awhile treat as should chips and candy. Heeding our children’s daily diets as well as how much exercise they get on a daily basis will help their bodies grow stronger. We’ve included the nutritionist’s sheet of worthwhile snacks on the back of this newsletter to give you some new ideas.

WHEN WE FOUND THE LAST SPECIAL LUNCH DAY OPEN  we decided to take advantage of it for a good cause. Check out the pink flier for what we’ve planned.

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR  when we get to tell you about all the scholarships that our 8th Graders have won for high school so if you have some hidden away that we don’t know about, get them out. We need to have a copy of an official notification letter for bragging rights!

PEOPLE AND EVENTS  Our Track Team did extremely well at Saturday’s Area Championships at Roxborough. The boys came in 2nd and the girls 3rd. We will have great representation at the Archdiocesan Championships at Franklin Field at U of P on June 3rd. There are medals galore hanging around the team’s necks. Well done, team!

Two of our alums recently were honored at Ryan. Jacqueline Scott received an award for journalism and Dan Griffin was inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Congratulations to Kaitlin Demchuk (8-25) on making the Villa Joseph Marie High School Varsity Cheerleading Squad for the upcoming school year. Try-outs were fierce and Kaitlin was chosen as one of only sixteen girls to make the squad. We are proud, Kaitlin—Good luck in Florida!

CRITICAL THINKING 101  It’s just like baseball—we have a double header! Jessica Sylvester (7-24) had her correct entry drawn from all the correct entries. It was 58 x 3 = 174 = 29 x 6. Then when we checked Jessica Parker’s (4-10) entry, it came out correct as well.  She had the answer of 39 x 4 = 156 = 78 x 2. Jessica S. and Jessica P. will each receive a $10 Scrip of Choice certificate. For our final critical thinking of the 2005-2006 year, “A pronoun is a word, such as him or yours that stands for a noun or forms its possessive. Name ten pronouns ranging in length from one letter to ten letters long.”

MAY 17, 2006

“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.”

YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS TONIGHT’S MEETING  Our final Home and School meeting is an important one. It will begin early with our Summer Books and Used Uniform Sales and a scientific display of physical machines in the form of carnival rides. You’ll hear some of the 6th Graders sing out the explanations of how and why these rides work. At 7:30, we will hear from a nutritionist in regards to our children’s eating habits, our outgoing president Janet Dunphy will introduce our new board and we will get a H & S end-of-year report.  We have a new school program for the fall which will impact you directly, and there will be a thank you reception for all of you.

YOUNG PERSONS MASS—THIS SUNDAY       AT NOON!  We know that so many of you are looking forward to this monthly mass and it’s here this Sunday, the 21st, at noon. We welcome all of you and hope you bring a friend with you. Again, refreshments will follow in Holy Family Hall.

ANDY WALLACE SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION  The entries from 5th to 8th Graders about “The Person Who Has Influenced Me the Most” were forwarded to the foundation this morning. The members will have their work cut out for them as there are a good many entries.  Many people have asked to donate in the name of Andy, a St. Chris grad, who died suddenly. You can send donations to the Andy Wallace Foundation, 4220 Frontier Road , Hatboro , PA 19040 . It was gratifying to hear from so many people about this fine young man.

OUR GYM SHOW IS HERE!  This year’s show American Idols takes place next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Each night’s show is dedicated to fallen Police Officer Skerski and a part of our box office will be donated to his family. We look forward to seeing you at one or more of these nights. In addition to buying tickets at Trainer Hall after school each day, you can also send in your order with your student. It is important, however, that you label the envelope GYM SHOW and that put all the necessary information inside. For example, we need to know the name and grade of the student who will be bringing the tickets home so that we can get them to him/her.

UNIFORM INFORMATION PACKETS  Each of our students will be bringing home grade-appropriate uniform information for the fall. Please ask your children to share them with you if they are not your youngest and/or only and might not have put it in the envelope.

MARKET DAY USERS, THIS IS YOUR GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY  Included in today’s envelope is a Market Day tuition voucher request form.  If you have ordered from Market Day during this school year, you should fill this form out and return it to school on or before June 1st. If you have not returned the form by that date, we will assume that you would like to donate your credit to the school.  If you have any questions, please call Cheryl Sylvester at 215-396-0354 and she will be happy to help you. Both Cheryl and Mary Ann Moore have worked long and hard to make our Market Day Program the amazing success that it is. If you use Market Day, you have seen from the age range of volunteers why it works so well.

END OF YEAR REPORT CARDS  “To receive final report cards, offertory contributions must have reached $725 by June 12.  As you know the minimum offertory contribution for the 05/06 school year (7/1/05 to 6/30/06) is $780.  If you have any questions regarding your level of contributions, please Maryann Junod at parish office.

Applications for monthly payment plan must be on file in parish office by June 30, 2006.  Applications are available in school and parish offices.”

SPECIAL REMINDER TO 8TH GRADE PARENTS  Your family offertory obligations needs to be paid in full by June 12th in order for your child to participate in graduation activities.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS  Many members of our St. Chris Track Team advanced from the division to the area championships and will be running this Saturday, the 20th, at Roxborough HS. We wish them well and thank their coaches for all the hard work involved.

It’s nice to see our grads in action.  At the Connelly Foundation Awards Ceremony last Thursday, we had the pleasure of seeing Dan Griffin playing in the band. Besides his membership in the band, we know that Dan had a part in Ryan’s recent production of Beauty and the Beast.

CRITICAL THINKING 101  We got lots more responses and Elizabeth Zuk (3-7) had her correct entry drawn. One million $1 bills would weigh 2500 lb. and stack up to 360 ft. It’s a good thing we carry our millions around as thousands, isn’t it?

For next week’s chance at a $10 Scrip of Choice certificate, “Place the numbers one through nine in the blanks below so that both multiplications are true.

__  __ x __ = __  __  __ = __  __ x __

MAY 10, 2006

“O Mary, we crown you with blossoms today, Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May…”

WE ARE EXCITED FOR YOU AND FOR US  St. Christopher School will be piloting a June staff development program on what would have been the two half school days of Tuesday, June 13th, and Wednesday, June 14th.  We know how difficult half days are for the majority of parents and so students will have no school on those days. They will return on Thursday, the 15th, at their usual time for end-of-the-year closing activities, report cards, awards, and our closing liturgy. Teachers will be engaged in curriculum meetings and staff development on those days as we look ahead to the new school year.

THEIR LONG AWAITED DAY IS ALMOST HERE  After receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation in February, our 2nd Graders have been preparing to receive the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. They know what it means in words to receive the Body of Christ and they are waiting for the reality of it. Please pray for these cherubs as they receive the Body of Jesus for the very first time this Saturday. No wonder families have such celebrations afterwards! The joy of this sacrament is worthy of celebration. Pray also that they continue the celebration each and every Sunday from now on.

THE TIME HONORED TRADITION OF THE MAY PROCESSION  will be continued as usual here at St. Christopher School on Monday, the 15th. Our Blessed Mother will be honored by the student body and faculty in general and by our First Communicants, Confirmed 6th Graders, and our 8th Grade graduates in particular. This year Megan Nardi is our May Queen and Alyssa DeTreux, Shannon Dougherty, Colleen Gentilcore, Samantha Kuhar, Beth Rymal, and Jamie Schuck are the May Court. These traditions of our Church are special to us and need to be passed on. You can probably still sing many of the old Mary songs that you learned when you were in school.

Whether or not your child has gym on Monday, please have him/her wear the regular uniform in honoring Mary. Thanks!

OUR ANNUAL MOTHER’S DAY PLANT SALE IS A TRADITION  that we plan to keep here at St. Christopher School. When you see the excitement on these cherubs’ faces as they show you the blossoms they have themselves chosen for their mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, aunts, etc. you know why.

BMI OR BODY MASS INDEX IS NOW A PART OF THE PA GROWTH SCREENING PROGRAM  and our students in K, 1, and 3 were measured. The confidential information is being sent home to those parents and this well-being partnership with the School District of Philadelphia is welcomed on behalf of our students. Wouldn’t it be great if every child in our school could be measured in this way?

DORNEY PARK DAY IS FRIDAY, JUNE 9TH  but you don’t have to wait anywhere close to then to get your tickets. Remember that we return unused tickets for bad weather or a personal reason for not going so don’t worry about being stuck with them. With all that’s coming up, ordering them can get away from you.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES CONTINUED  Cardinal Dougherty High School is offering a summer enrichment program for students in grades 5-8. Our office has brochures if you are interested. Drexel University’s summer reading program continues as well and their brochure is enclosed. CORA Services once again has an interesting array of programs as well.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS  Imagine! Our track team ran in the renown Penn Relays. Can’t you just imagine the thrill it was for the students who participated?  This Saturday they will be running in the Division Championships at a site to be determined according to their schedule. We wish them the best.

CRITICAL THINKING 101  Okay, we’ll try again. How much would one million one dollar bills weigh and how tall would they be stacked up? We only got three responses and we know for a fact that our 3rd Graders should know the answer to this question. Subtle hint, huh?

NO SCHOOL FOR YOUR CHILDREN THIS FRIDAY  Although many nations and cultures take the day to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, an important historical date, our teachers will be hard at work here looking at teaching frameworks and other topics so that we can better prepare your children.

DON’T FORGET TO SET ASIDE YOUR EVENING ON MAY 17TH  so that you’ll be able to attend the final Home and School meeting of the year. In addition to meeting the new board for whom you have been voting (reminder!), you will also hear a nutritionist speak, get to purchase both summer reading books and gently used uniforms as well as enjoying a thank you social for all that everyone does to make St. Chris the special place that it is. You’ll have the chance to let outgoing president Janet Dunphy know how much you appreciate all she’s done for your children and to let fashion show chairperson Janinne McNally know what a spectacular job she did along with her committee at this year’s Festival of Fashions.

“THE PERSON WHO HAS INFLUENCED ME THE MOST”  is the topic for the essay that students in Grades 5-8 are encouraged to write in hopes of winning the 2006-007 full family stewardship rate tuition scholarship given by the Andy Wallace Foundation. Andy was a graduate of our school who died at age 28 in an accident. Because he was such a positive influence to so many, his friends and family work to be the same in his honor. Our 5th-8th Grade students each got the paperwork with the details.

WILDWATER KINGDOM AND RIDES GALORE ARE CALLING YOUR NAME  Our Dorney Park Chairperson Eileen Kelly suggests that you place your orders now for our annual Dorney Park Day on Friday, June 9th. Remember that the checks for this day won’t be deposited until AFTER that day in case it rains or you have a major change in family plans and we need to make returns. However, it is difficult for you and Eileen if you wait until the 11th hour to order your tickets both for the delivery timeframe and availability.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS  Monica Sucharski (6-19) was in the top five at the diocesan-wide Houghton Mifflin Spelling Bee last Friday. We are proud of Monica for representing SCS so well.

Kaitlin Demchuk (8-25) will be performing in Donna Graham’s 6th Annual Singing Recital at the Y on Red Lion Road this Saturday, May 6th. Kaitlin has been performing in group numbers for this show for six years and has been singing solo number for  four years. We are all very proud of her for doing such a fine job.

Kateri Cimoch’05 received the "Best of School" (Archbishop Wood) and 1st Runner-up "Best of City" Awards for the Writing category in the Philadelphia Inspired Expressions Contest. The piece she submitted was one she had done for an assignment in class last year. She received a $500.00 prize at a ceremony at the University of the Arts on April 4th and the Best of City award was presented by local author Leslie Banks. She was most impressed with the piece and spent quite awhile talking with Kateri after the ceremony. Needless to say, we are extremely proud of Kateri!

Alexandra Boyle’05, currently a freshman at Nazareth Academy, has been selected to join the Tri-M Music Honor Society, the international music honor society that recognizes gifted students for their academic and musical achievements. Alexandra was honored at a National Honor Society Ceremony on March 30th.  We are very proud of this combined accomplishment on Alexandra’s part. Her family would like to thank Mr. Holdren for enriching and encouraging Alex’s talents and her appreciation of music while she was a student here. Like us, they know that “he is a wonderful asset to our school.”

CRITICAL THINKING 101  Conner Smith (5-15) will receive this week’s $10 Scrip of Choice certificate for having his winning entry drawn. The words were  1) Cincinnati, 2)  Connecticut, 3)  Prince Edward Island, and 4) Canaveral.

For next week, “How much would a million one dollar bills weigh and how tall would they be stacked up?”

“We are Easter people and hallelujah is our song!”  ~ St. Augustine

DRESS DOWN FOR NICKELS FOR NEIGHBORS  This is it—our last chance to show how caring St. Chris students are for others. To encourage giving to this diocesan youth outreach which is part of the Catholic Charities Appeal, we are holding a dress down day tomorrow and asking for contributions that exceed nickels, that’s for sure. On Friday, our Student Council president will represent us at a gathering with Bishop McFadden at Ryan to present our check to the bishop. Let’s make it a worthwhile one as we wrap up the young people’s part of this campaign.

IT’S FINALLY HERE!  Janine McNally and her committee have been hard at work for months getting ready for tomorrow evening and the time is here. Our Festival of Fashions is about to unfold. We congratulate all of the people who have put so much time and effort into what is sure to be an outstanding evening. We look forward to seeing you there. Look for a few surprises!

CATHOLIC IDENTITY, CURRICULUM, DEVELOPMENT, LEGAL ISSUES….  were only a few of the topics addressed at different seminars and workshops that Mrs. Tremper and I attended last week while at the annual NCEA (National Catholic Education Association) conference. Besides being away from school, the hardest part of the conference is deciding which of the many meetings to attend. Keeping St. Christopher as strong and as worthwhile for our students’ futures as possible motivates us to learn as much as possible in the time away.

WE HAVE A NEW BABY  We are proud to announce that Mrs. Lauren Lafratta, our Pre-K teacher, gave birth to a new daughter this past Saturday. Emily Patricia was born on her daddy’s birthday! We have sent them best wishes from the St. Christopher School Community. As soon as we get word about Mrs. Barbara Geiss, a 6th Grade teacher, having her soon-to-be-born cherub, we will share that good news with you as well.  Let’s see, these babies will be graduating from their 8th Grades in the year 2020!

OPPORTUNITIES CONTINUED   Anyone interested in playing ice hockey for Archbishop Ryan during the 2006-2007 season should register between May 8 and May 12 at the Flyers Skate Zone between 7 PM to 8:30 PM each of those evenings. For more information, please visit www.ryanhockey.org.

The Philadelphia Department of Recreation is offering a summer art camp for interested students. We have a few brochures or you can contact Anne Marie Dunne at 215-685-2871or at AnneMarie.Dunne@phila.gov.

The Rock School for Dance Education is part of the City Dance Program and is holding auditions in May. Call 215-551-7010 ext. 1105 for further information.

The Polonia Bank Flyers Skate Zone is holding a Summer Camp Zone which includes many diverse activities. Fliers are available by contacting our office or calling 215-677-9656.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS   6th Grader Monica Sucharski has advanced to the Finals of the Houghton-Mifflin Spelling Bee. She will be spelling away this Friday at Stella Maris School in South Philadelphia. Thank you for representing us so well, Monica, and good luck!

Our Varsity Cheerleading Squad took a trip to Wildwood this weekend for the well-known Beast of the East Competition held on Sunday. Our squad took 3rd Place in the All-Around Division out of six All-Star teams. Our captains are very proud of everyone on the squad as are the rest of us. Great job!

CRITICAL THINKING 101  This week’s $10 Scrip of Choice certificate is given to Emily Delgado (4-11) whose correct entry was drawn. The automaker was Audi, the dog breed Doberman, the capital of a western state Carson City and the sandwich meat salami. Let’s continue this category for next week:

  1. City with a Major League baseball team

  2. Colony before the Revolutionary War

  3. Province of Canada

  4. Cape in the United States

APRIL 19, 2006

“Christ is risen, Alleluia, Alleluia!”

A GLORIOUS EASTER COMES FROM A MEANINGFUL LENT  Here at St. Chris we all worked hard to make our Lenten journey a real one from our Pre-K students to our 8th Graders. As a school we made sure that we kept Holy Week just for Jesus and His need for us to be with Him. On Wednesday we held a school-wide retreat so that we could go home with Jesus foremost in our minds. There are certain times when math and grammar are not just as important. Our 8th Graders were certainly the flag bearers for helping keep the day a spiritual one. Small groups of them went to each classroom to teach the students the meaning of the Paschal candle and helped them back the ones you now have at home. Other 8th Graders presided over Seders that we held in Holy Family Hall for K to 8. To close the day in no uncertain terms all of our students witnessed the Living Stations produced and performed by our 8th Grade. One of our 1st Graders summarized the day well, “We were doing art and seeing a lot of things but they were all making me think about God all day long.”

A DRUM ROLL PLEASE….  When we called four 8th Graders to report to the office following announcements last Monday, they wondered what they had done. Father Joe let them know just what it was that they had done. He told Kelly Clavin, Christine Gradel, Stephen Jackson, and James Murphy that they had been awarded the Connelly scholarships applicable to one-third of their tuition for each of their four years in diocesan high schools. We congratulate these young people and wish them well as they work to fulfill their potential in high school.

DO YOU REMEMBER THE UNCLE SAM “I NEED YOU!” WWII POSTERS?  Well, we need you!  Our Home and School Board has a number of positions open and we need good people to fill them. That means you! Please consider being nominated or nominating yourself to be on the board. It is set up each year to meet the needs of the members who serve on it so you needn’t worry about whether or not it meets your schedule. Please remember the saying that “It takes a busy person….”

A FESTIVAL OF FASHION  AWAITS THE LADIES NEXT WEEK   We hope that you have arranged to enjoy this evening out with other St. Chris moms and their friends and families. If you’re coming on your own, you won’t be alone for long when you meet the people at your table and share dinner and fashion show talk.

WHAT WOULD YOU PUT IN A FUNDRAISING BROCHURE?  The people at Cherrydale Farms know that we do not do formal fundraising here at St. Chris and so have asked for our help in planning a brochure for schools and places that do. In return for our input, each student who returns a survey will receive a prize, each family a jar candle, and our library funds for book purchases. Just think of it—we’re a marketing group!

FINANCIAL AID FOR SEPTEMBER There is limited financial assistance available for families with serious financial difficulty.  These families may apply for financial consideration.  All applications should be in writing to our tuition review committee no later than May 1.  Parents seeking assistance will be sent an application form which must be completed before a meeting is schedule for them with the committee.  Please be assured that these families will be treated with dignity, respect and confidentiality.  Please keep in mind that this applies only to families in grades K-8.  Full tuition must be paid for Pre-kindergarten.  Families receiving assistance are expected to be active families of St. Christopher Parish who practice Christian Stewardship and to be using Scrip Program to reduce their tuition.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES  The annual Broad Street Run scheduled for May 7th once again has a Metrokids Fun piece to it for interested families.  You can call school for a flier or go directly online to www.broadstreetrun.com to get more information about the day.

Nazareth Academy Grade School is holding a summer theater dance camp which includes acting, music training, singing, dancing, guitar, arts and crafts, Irish dancing, hip hop, Tae Kwon Do and more. They have opportunities for Pre-Schoolers as well as 1st to 8th Graders. You can call school for a flier or call Mrs. Campagna at 215-676-6585 for information.

CRITICAL THINKING 101  For next week’s puzzle, the clues come in twos. In each category, the first two letters of the clue are the same as the first two letters of the answer. For example, “Planet in the solar system—Pluto” Get it? Here you go for a chance at next week’s $10 Scrip of Choice certificate.

1)  Automaker    2)  Dog breed  3)  Capital of a western state  4)  Sandwich meat

APRIL 5, 2005

“Lift high the Cross, the love of Christ proclaim….”

DEEPENING OUR CATHOLIC IDENTITY  This Wednesday will not be a letter day at school so that students and teachers can take time to retreat from the ordinary and prepare especially for the extraordinary gift that God gives us through His Son’s death and resurrection. We will spend the day engaged in many activities including that will show how much God loves us. Our 8th Grade has been working long and hard to prepare Living Stations for presentation to our student body Wednesday afternoon. For the first time ever, they will also present these Living Stations to the Parish community Good Friday evening.

Easter Sunday, April 16, is Pope Benedict’s 79th birthday. Free birthday eCards are available on Sadlier Book Publishers’ website www.webelieve.com. Students can choose from a variety of designs, add a personal message and send the electronic card directly to Pope Benedict.

A SESSION TO HELP PARENTS HELP THEIR CHILDREN  This Monday evening at 7 PM Officer Scott Methany of the Lower Moreland Police Department will be addressing the choking game issue for you. Please feel free to invite neighbors and friends to come to this important session.

WE NEED YOU!  This is a big turn-over year for our Home and School Board as many terms come to a close. In addition to the positions indicated on last week’s nomination form, the position of recording secretary is also available. Whether you are a working parent or not, please consider one of the board positions. The job of the board is to consider different options for our school and our students and to strengthen the relationship between home and school. Committees are then established from the general Home and School Association to carry out these options. You see this in action when you see the Fashion Show committee headed by Janine McNally hard at work on our April 27 Festival of Fashions evening or when you see Eileen Kelly and her committee working on our Mothers’ Day Plant Sale or Dorney Park Day. Feel free to call present board members or Mrs. Tremper or me with questions. It’s exciting to think about how Home and School can continue to grow for the sake of SCS.

VACATION AND UNIFORMS  School will close for the Easter holiday at the end of the day on Wednesday, the 12th and will begin again on Tuesday, the 18th. When students return, they may wear their optional “summer” uniforms which is the school golf shirt, school shorts, belt, white socks definitely above the ankle at all times, and white low-cut sneakers. Our school sweater may be worn with this uniform. Other than that, students who do not have appropriate summer uniforms should simply continue to wear their winter uniforms.

THE NEXT ENVELOPE WILL BE…  out on the 19th, the Wednesday after we return from our Easter holiday.  With Easter baskets, bonnets, etc. we thought that you wouldn’t need our envelope along with all the holiday things.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS  Congratulations to the Somerton 7 Year Old Boys Team for capturing the Peanut League Championship.  The team rallied from an early deficit to control the game and secure the victory over Vogt, 14-12. St. Christopher players include: Jimmy Crown, Michael Devlin, Billy Eastburn, Matt Kaminski, Chris Kuhar, Vincent Luciano, Jack Raynor, Brendan Ruskowski and Kurt Stengel.  The team was coached by Kurt Stengel and Steve Devlin.

Our CYO Track Team had their first events last Saturday at Roxborough HS. It’s been easy to spot the team by their sunburns. They will have another meet this Saturday at Rush at 10 AM and the next on the 15th at Roxborough at 9 AM.

Holy Ghost Prep is hosting a summer sports camp for both boys and girls. We have some brochures available or you may call Director Tony Chapman at 215-639-2102 ext. 210.

Bishop McDevitt HS is hosting summer programs including P/SAT Training, Critical Thinking Skills, and Algebra Enrichment for Gr. 5-9. For information, call  Dr. Richard Fuller at 610-275-9660.

CRITICAL THINKING 101  If only we had just the one bill in circulation!  There is a $100,000 Woodrow Wilson bill printed but not in circulation and a $10,000 Salmon Portland Chase bill which is in circulation. Daniel Rodden (4-10) had his correct entry drawn for a $10 Scrip of Choice certificate. Way to go, Dan!

We’ll take an Easter break and be back in circulation here on the 19th.

Can your family find ways to help Christ as He walks to Calvary?

MARCH 29, 2006

“Come Holy Spirit, enkindle the hearts of the faithful…”

THE LONG AWAITED DAY IS HERE!  Today is the day when our Confirmandi come before Bishop McFadden at 4 PM Mass to be confirmed with the Holy Spirit. These students have prepared well and are ready for this important part of their faith journey. Again, we ask that you remember them in prayer as they become adults in the eyes of the Church.

IF YOU MISSED THE FIRST ONE, DON’T MISS THIS   The second Youth-Young Person’s Mass is taking place this Sunday, April 2nd, at the Noon Mass. As if this special liturgy weren’t enough, the priests have arranged for hoagies and sodas to be available in HFH after the mass.

UNLESS YOU MOVE YOUR CLOCKS FORWARD THOUGH  you might miss a few things Sunday. Remember that to begin Daylight Savings Time, we “spring” forward moving our clocks ahead one hour. The Fire Department also recommends changing smoke detector batteries. Given the number of house fires in  Philadelphia , this is a very wise recommendation. Batteries that you feel still have some life in them can be used in equipment that has nothing to do with saving lives. The small cost of new batteries is well worth it.

AN IMPORTANT WEEK AWAITS OUR STUDENTS  This coming Tuesday, as part of the Parish Mission,  Father Dennis O’Donnell will be meeting with our students in three separate presentations to address them on their level. The next day, the head of Technology for the Archdiocese, Paul Sanfrancesco, will be addressing our 6-8th Grades about Internet concerns and dangers. Then on Thursday, former Phillies baseball player Jim Eisenreich will be speaking to students in Grades 4-8 about Tourette’s Syndrome which he himself has. Following this awareness presentation to the whole group at 1 PM, Mr. Eisenreich will then be privately with our students who themselves have Tourette’s at 2 PM. Please send their names in to me so that we can arrange this private session.

A POLICE OFFICER PRESENTATION OF THE “CHOKING GAME” PHENOMENA  has been arranged for our parents for Monday evening, April 10th, at 7 PM in Trainer Hall. Lower Moreland Police Officer Scott Methany will speak to you about this serious situation facing our children. Please feel free to bring friends and neighbors to hear what parents need to know and do to help their own children. We know from parent conversation that this “game” can take parents and children by surprise.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR 2006-07 There is limited financial assistance available for families with serious financial difficulty.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS  He made it all the way to 3rd Place, and it took the word corrugated to stump 8th Grader Joe Geoghan at the Philadelphia Tribune/Scripps Howard Regional Bee Saturday. That was quite an accomplishment, Joe! We are all proud of you and proud of 7th Graders Kaitlyn Murrray, Joseph Gallagher, Michael Pastore, and John Rizzo who represented SCS at the Archbishop Ryan Spelling Bee Saturday as well. All four did a great job and Kaitlyn made it to the end round.

All day today Conner Smith and Emily Gaggiano will be at Archbishop Shanahan rehearsing with students from all over the diocese for the Archdiocesan Elementary Choral Festival to be held this evening. We are so proud of these two students and Jessica Riloff, one of our Confirmandi,  who would also have been at the Festival.

Mary Jo Kovatich’04 received the 2nd Place Award in the Montgomery County Science Research Competition in the Microbiology Division as well as the U.S. Army Award. We support Mary Jo as she moves forward to the Delaware Valley Science Fair on April 4th.

CRITICAL THINKING 101  Michael Apice (8-26) will receive this week’s $10 Scrip of Choice certificate for having his correct answer drawn. “Who am I?”  Me—one and the same person!  For next week, “What is the highest denomination of U.S. paper money and who is pictured on it?”

 March 22, 2006

“Listen to my voice; then I will be your God and you shall be my people. Walk in all the ways that I command you, so that you may prosper.”   ~ Jeremiah 7:23-24

CONFIRMATION DISMISSAL  Next Wednesday, the 29th, is the day that Bishop McFadden will be here to confer the sacrament of Confirmation on our parish 6th graders. The students here and in CCD have been preparing for this for months and months. Because Confirmation begins at 4 PM, we are having early dismissal for all students at 11:30 AM in order that all that needs finalizing at the end will be done and everyone involved will be ready. We ask that you and your families remember our Confirmandi in prayer either recalling what your Confirmation day was like or anticipating it in the future. It is such an integral part of our faith journey and calls for the support of the Church faithful.

HELPING OUR STUDENTS HELP OTHERS  can be done in very fun ways. Remember that Jesus said we should not go around in sackcloth and ashes but happy in our giving and doing. To that end, we are holding our Ice Cream day this Friday to help Amigo de Jesus, the orphanage that Fr. Denny O’Donnell directs in Honduras. Each student will pay $2 to purchase ice cream.

Next Wednesday, the 29th, our Student Council has decided that a dress down day is a great start to the 2nd Annual Nickels for Neighbors diocesan campaign to help others in our own diocese. While the name is very catchy, we obviously will happily accept paper money and higher value coins in this effort.

WE HAD A VERY SPECIAL ASSEMBLY  When the secretary for Josephine Mandeville, daughter of the Connellys who created the Connelly Foundation, called last week, we were excited. Without being given details, we were asked to assemble our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.  Mrs. Mandeville addressed these students about their Catholic education and its importance as well as well as leading into her scholarship presentation. Our students learned that of 1.650 students who had the academic eligibility and who had committed to attending Archdiocesan high schools, the top 40 applicants from the January testing would be receiving full four year scholarships.  She then called  8th grader Sarah Malamut forward. You can imagine how exciting it was for all of us as she presented Sarah with her scholarship acknowledgement. We were all so proud of Sarah as we know you are. SCS has had eight Neumann Scholarship winners since 1996 and we look forward to students continuing to win them.

HAVE YOU BEEN WONDERING?  We just heard from a parent wondering why we have students walk over to the new lobby doors on the cold mornings we’ve had rather than use the main lobby doors. Quite simply, it’s to keep the wings on both sides of the main lobby warmer for the students. The new lobby entrance has a heat blowing apparatus that you have probably experienced walking into some big building. This works well and keeps the cold at bay. Simple reason but good for you to know!

Another query we had was about how we handle forgotten lunches. Our children should know to come down to the table in the main lobby to check to see whether or not you have brought that lunch. Often a child realizes that lunch is at home or in the car and comes down to the office to call you about it. Other times you have told them that you’ll bring it.  We ask that children check at morning recess or just before their lunch to see if it’s been delivered. We do not like to interrupt lessons by calling rooms over the loudspeaker unless it’s an unavoidable message. If a student still does not have lunch in HFH, others usually share or we keep some snack crackers at the milk station.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS  Alumna Colleen Garvin’02 has been quite busy. For her Senior project Colleen compiled a cookbook for diabetics which she had published. Colleen’s motivation was the fact that her father and her grandparents were diabetics as well as her uncle. Colleen’s work was so well done that it has been recognized by the media. Colleen has been  on a radio show and this evening a television reporter is visiting her and her family at home.

Congratulations to Raymond Rocks (4-11) and the Blazers Ice Hockey Team for winning the gold medal at the Can/Am Tournament in Lake Placid this past weekend. Skating where Olympians skated and winning the gold will become very special memories for Ray!

CRITICAL THINKING 101  Maria DiMascia (6-21) will receive this week’s $10 Scrip of Choice certificate for having her correct entry drawn. The family had 4 boys and 3 girls. For next week the very old riddle, “Brothers and sisters I have none, but that man’s father is my father’s son? Who am I?”

MARCH 15, 2006

“Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise. I arise today Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity, Through belief in the threeness, Through confession of the oneness, Of the Creator of Creation.” ~ from St. Patrick’s Breastplate Prayer

TWO CALENDAR REMINDERS Children’s Bingo will be held tomorrow, Thursday evening, at 6:30 back in Holy Family Hall since students have no school on St. Patrick’s Day Friday, a faculty meeting day. Please remember that all students at bingo need to attend with an adult responsible for them.

3/14 = PI DAY How else to celebrate Pi / 3.14 than with a real pie or even better, many real pies? That’s just what our Honors Math and 8th Grade Math classes did today to celebrate this mathematical holiday. Do you remember the formulas you learned to measure circles using pi? Think radius and diameter.

2ND TRIMESTER REPORT CARDS will be distributed to our students next Monday. As usual we ask that you use these reports for the tools that they are. Look to see your children’s strengths and challenges academically as well as their Personal Growth and Study and Effort Skills. Reports are meant to show how children have progressed to date and what that progress indicates. Please check to see if a teacher has requested a conference with you before signing the report. Likewise, if you’d like to request a conference after seeing the report summary, please check that parent section.

YOU MAKE OUR DAY! So often we address our concerns about parents for whom punctuality, arriving and dismissal procedures, etc. are problematic. To those of you who are always with the program on your children’s behalf, know that you are never taken for granted. We celebrate you --and we hope that whatever makes it difficult for some families to get with the program changes!

OUR ADMISSION AND TUITION POLICY is enclosed in this week’s envelope for you to keep with your school papers so that you can review if/when necessary. As usual Maryann Junod in the Parish Center is available to answer any questions you might have about this policy statement.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS Congratulations to the following 2nd Grade members of Cub Scout Pack 36 for their time and effort in earning their Light of Christ Religious Medals: Kristian Celona, Timothy Lamb, Jonathon Lawson, Christopher Maffei, Joseph Murphy, and Max Serrano. Besides being recognized at the annual Scout banquet in February, these boys will be honored at the Scout Mass this Sunday, March 19th. What a special medal to earn!

Alexis Benz (1-30) has been involved in the Angel on My Shoulder religious project with members of her Brownie Troop #5 at Our Lady of Calvary Church for the past four months. This project consisted of a food drive service project to help the needy, Bible readings with discussions, and some crafts. Alexis will be receiving a much earned “Angel” Achievement pin at the special 2 PM mass this Sunday at the Basilica/Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul.

Last weekend Swim Team members Andrew Sideras, Grace Cochrane, Meaghan Harrington, and Shannon Harrington swam in the 2006 Middle Atlantic Junior Olympics. Congratulations on a fine job! We are proud of you.

Both our Varsity and JV Cheerleading Teams earned 2nd Places in their All-Around competitions at Cardinal Dougherty. Delanie Lynch won the Varsity Little Miss Award and Joanne Savitch won the JV Little Miss Award. Our entire team won the Spirit Award. It’s been quite a year for our cheerleaders, hasn’t it?

Congratulations to the Somerton Girls Under 11 Basketball team on winning the 2006 Northeast Peanut League Championship this past Sunday. St. Chris students include Sandy Aiken, Emily Gaggiano, Kristen Goldstein, Bernadette Jackson, Nora Jackson, Lindsey Johnson, and Kaitlyn Shields. What a championship season!

Our Boys Varsity "A" team coached by Steve Devlin finished out their season by winning the Neumann-Goretti CYO tournament in the championship game defeating Our Lady of Carmel (South Philly) 35-28. Considering the season the team had last year and only one returning starter, we are very proud of our guys who came out with a very successful season of being Region I champs, Archbishop Ryan Tournament Champs, Holy Family Tournament Finalists, and now the Neumann-Goretti Tournament Champs. Kevin Regan was named Tournament MVP, and Greg Olenski and Dennis Regan were named to the Tournament team. The boys’ parents can't thank Steve Devlin enough for his dedication and hard work in getting these boys through another successful season.

CRITICAL THINKING 101 Congratulations to this week’s winner Shannon O’Fee (4-10). The smaller animal is a gnat. You change the n to an o to get goat. For a chance at next week’s $10 Scrip of Choice, “Charlie and Beth (brother and sister) come from a large family. Charlie has as many brothers as he has sisters, but Beth has only half as many sisters as she has brothers. How many brothers and sisters total are in the family?”

MARCH 8, 2006

“All things are possible for God.” Mark 10:27

DOES YOUR FAMILY HAVE A PACT WITH GOD? However, we pray, the goals of prayer are to communicate with God and to join our hearts in the Holy Spirit. There are many kinds of prayer and it is easy to remember the four main kinds if we consider that we have a PACT with God:
PETITION—We ask for God’s help for others and ourselves.
ADORATION—We see God’s greatness in our lives and tell God about that greatness.
CONTRITION—We are sorry for something we’ve done or failed to do, and we ask God to forgive us.
THANKSGIVING—We thank God for all He has given us.

ONE THESAURUS, TWO THESAURI OR TWO THESAURUSES? Whatever you prefer to call them, we want you to know that we have added the latest editions available in our classrooms for your children to use to expand their writing skills. Besides these texts which give synonyms of words, we have also acquired more classroom dictionaries which like the thesauri are created for specific age levels. Strong communication skills will always be an integral part of education no matter what kinds of technology become available. We always need to be able to think critically and communicate effectively.

IT HAS TO BE SAID REMINDER Report cards will only be distributed to children whose families have met minimum requirements no later than Tuesday, March 14 on offertory and tuition as follows:
offertory at $510, monthly tuition paid through February and all other plans paid in full.
Any questions or concerns should be taken up with Maryann Junod in parish office.

WHY? Why do you think some of our parents are willing to compromise our children’s safety by how they drop off and pick up their children each day? Our school worked with the city and a traffic committee to put in the safest arrival and dismissal plan for our children and yet a group of parents do not follow this plan. Convenience never outweighs safety—there is no other way to put it. We are grateful to the majority of parents who follow the safety plan.

FOUR GUARANTEED DIOCESAN HIGH SCHOOL AWARDS AWAIT OUR 8TH GRADE Once again the Connelly Foundation is making four year tuition grants valued at a third of the yearly tuition available to 8th Graders throughout Philadelphia. The 2006 value is $1,445. St. Christopher School will have four of these grants for students planning to attend archdiocesan high schools who best demonstrate the value of Catholic education and who strive to achieve their fullest academic potential. There are both deadlines and information requirements necessary to apply for these awards. What a help!

TIME FLIES AND BEFORE YOU KNOW IT… you’ve missed the date that applications and/or fees are due. If you are a family that overlooked either the annual application with its $120 fee or the 2nd Trimester lunch fee, consider this a reminder. With our 3rd Trimester beginning next week, you don’t want to really be far behind. If there is a situation we should know about, please call us.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS This past Sunday night our High School CYO Boys’ Basketball Team ably coached by Russ Wagner became Division Champions beating St. Matthew’s for the title. Way to go, Team!

We continue to receive news of high school acceptances and scholarships offered to our 8th Graders. We are proud of their accomplishments and look forward to sharing that overview with you later in the spring.

CRITICAL THINKING 101 Many of you knew that the letter that comes next in the series A C F J O is U and Mary Harrington (3-6) had her correct entry drawn for a $10 Scrip of Choice Certificate. For next week, “Think of four-letter common noun that names a very tiny animal. Now change the second letter of that noun to the next letter in the alphabet. What larger animal, also four letters long, do you come up with? Hint: The name of each animal begins with the letter g.

MARCH 1, 2006

“Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting…” Joel 2:12

A WAKE-UP CALL! That’s what the message of Lent is for us. We have sinned and we are reminded to turn fully to God. From the ashes we receive today reminding us that we have sinned and been forgiven to the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday, in gratitude let us make this journey of Lent together with the whole Church. Each of us is called as individuals and as families to make our minds, our bodies, and our actions ready to celebrate with joy the resurrection of Jesus.

OUR YOUNG PEOPLE’S MASS held last Sunday was celebrated with joyful exuberance by all in attendance. The Word, the music, and the homily all enhanced the celebration of the Eucharist. In addition to planning these young people’s masses, Father Phil has planned a Churches and Cheesesteaks Day which is already at capacity. Father Joe certainly knew what he was doing when he asked Father Phil and Sister Michele to find ways to reach out to our youth and their spiritual needs.

COUNSELOR’S RESPONSES TO QUESTIONS FROM H & S MEETING

Q: “What is an appropriate age to discuss this subject (The Choking Game) with a child who probably has never heard about it? Is bringing up this subject opening up a ‘can of worms’ unnecessarily?”

A: “According to the experts (articles on internet) this phenomenon is being observed in the age groups 9-14 and 10-16 and children even younger have been hurt. It seems to be a situation where more information is better for children for safety and prevention. It’s being seen as similar to the talk you have with your children about the dangers of talking to strangers, in that the more they are informed, the more they can avoid things that might really hurt them. It’s simply letting them know that it is really not okay for anyone to be putting their hands around their neck and trying to choke them, even if they say it’s just a game. This talk can be empowering instead of frightening and could possibly prevent a tragedy.”

Q: “I check my daughter’s e-mail and blog sites regularly and she understands what she is and is not allowed to do, however, while I am surfing through different blog sites, I have come across to some that belong to kids she knows, Many of them are inappropriate, listing a lot of personal information and they type things that I do not want my child reading. Should I be alerting these parents, or just minding my own business?”

A: “It seems this is a judgment call one has to make, but knowing the harm that could come to these children and families, I think I’d rather err on the side of intrusion for the sake of safety and well-being. I know I’d definitely want to be forewarned. Anything that has the intention of prevention and safety seems positive. Isn’t it a positive thing that we should work together to protect our children?”

YOU HAD TO BE THERE... and you had to keep your eyes and ears wide open to keep up with joke after joke after joke from comedian after comedian after comedian Saturday night in Trainer Hall with our own parent Joey Callahan leading all the mayhem. Parents are already talking up next year’s event and it hasn’t even been scheduled yet! We’ve certainly got a winner in Comedy Night! We are grateful to H & S and CYO for sponsoring this popular night.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS Congratulations to our Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team who made it to the Regional Play-offs before losing to St. Patrick’s of Malvern. The girls and their parents claim that the highlight of their season was the great game against St. Matt’s.

FIFTY MEMBERS OF THE SWIM TEAM WENT TO CHAMPS ON SATURDAY FEB 18 AND SUNDAY FEB 19 AT LASALLE COLLEGE AND CAME AWAY WITH 15 FIRST PLACES, 12 SECOND PLACES AND 17 THIRD PLACES AS WELL AS AN ASSORTMENT OF RIBBONS AND MEDALS. ALL THE CHILDREN EXHIBITED GREAT SPORTSMANSHIP. THE COACHES ARE VERY PROUD OF ALL THE SWIMMERS. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND WE HOPE TO SEE EVERYONE BACK NEXT YEAR AS WELL AS SOME NEW FACES, THANKS, MRS. GRIFFIN AND MRS. NICKLOUS. WE CAME IN THIRD PLACE IN OUR CONFERENCE THIS YEAR. WAY TO GO SAINT CHRIS!

CRITICAL THINKING 101 From the contest before, Corinne Hughes (K-35) is the winner again. The numerical sum of consonants composed of both curved and straight lines is 96. This week’s $10 Scrip of Choice certificate goes to Marikate Kidd (4-10) whose correct answer was drawn. The number 4 has the same letter class—four letters in its spelling as in its numerical value.

For next week, “Which letter comes next?” A C F J O

A REMINDER TO ALL PARENTS At the baptism of our children we commit to our God that we will raise our children in our Catholic faith. Last night the adults at First Reconciliation repeated the prayer above. We’ve included it for you as a reminder of the awesome responsibility we have before God to raise the children entrusted to us through His love.

It is no small matter that God has placed these little ones in your care. How do you as a parent carry out your responsibility? Last evening the 2nd Graders had an examination of conscience preparing them to receive Reconciliation for the very first time. If there were a parent examination of conscience, would it strike a chord with you? How might you respond to God’s prodding of your conscience? Raising our children is so hard but can be so much easier if we accept God’s help and strength.

STRENGTHS, LIMITATIONS, OPPORTUNITIES, AND CHALLENGES were what was on the table yesterday when our official visit from the Archdiocesan Office of Education took place. To prepare for the visit, last fall our faculty individually considered these four aspects for each of the following benchmarks: Catholic Identity and Mission, Curriculum/Academic Quality, Physical Plant and Facilities, Enrollment, Marketing, and Development, and Leadership. The day was spent looking at school and discussing how to address each of these aspects for each benchmark. Education doesn’t just happen—it takes planning and vision. Catholic education takes that and the handprint of God to make it happen. Thank you for your commitment to it and be assured of ours. We will never sit back when your children’s futures call us forward to constantly re-evaluate how to best prepare them for this Third Millennium.

WE SHOCKED A LOT OF PEOPLE The information shared with you about Internet dangers for your children and self-inflicted dangers shocked many of you. Life is not easy in 2006 and we, as parents and educators, are called to know what these dangers are and how to deal with them relative to our children. The message Parents ~ the Anti-Drug translates to all these other areas. We must not only know what out there but must know if and how our children are involved. There is no other way. We are grateful to our computer teacher Kevin Burza and our CORA counselor Eve Boyd for their respective powerful presentations. As a follow-through to the choking game issue, we are inviting Police Officer Scott Methany to address you about this as he has made it his field of expertise.

MAKE WAY FOR THE LATEST FASHIONS If you’d like to be on the planning committee for our Passion for Fashion April evening, come to the meeting tomorrow night, Thursday, the 23rd, at 7 PM in the meeting/scrip room. You only need to commit to what you can handle in your life. Come and meet other parents for the social side of it as well.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS Congratulations to George Furitsch (5-13) for winning 1st Place Sunday at the Northeast Peanut League All-Star game in the skills competition for ages 9 and 10.

The 2005-2006 Who’s Who Among Outstanding Middle School Students has a very special listing. Kaitlin Demchuk (8-25) has been accepted to be included in this publication representing 22,000 middle schools. Congratulations, Kaitlin!

We have word that Nicole Scott ’05 is ranked #1 out of 538 freshmen at Ryan. Way to go, Nicole! Wow!

CRITICAL THINKING 101 Uh-oh! Last week’s contest entries are home on my dining room table and I’m here. We’ll have to announce that winner next week. In the meantime, the “letter class” of a whole number is the number of letter in that number. For example, the letter class of 16 (SIXTEEN) is 7, the letter class of 25 (TWENTY-FIVE) is 10, and so on. There is only one number between 1 and 5,000 that is the only representative of its letter class—that is, the number itself and the number of letters that spell that number are the same. Can you find it for a chance at the $10 Scrip of Choice certificate for next week?

FEBRUARY 15, 2005

REPORT CARDS WILL BE HERE ON MARCH 20 Second trimester report cards will be withheld if monthly payment plan tuitions have not been paid through the month of February and/or for families whose Offertory contributions are at a low level. As an awareness note, know that contributions averaging $15 weekly beginning last July 1 would total $495 through February 12. To insure accurate recording of your Sunday Offertory contributions, you are reminded to use the envelopes provided and to mark the amount enclosed. Maryann Junod will answer any questions or concerns you may have in these areas. She may be reached at our Parish Center 673- 5177.

FEBRUARY 8, 2006

May we avail ourselves of the Eucharistic Jesus in every way!

IT’S AN ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT MEETING FOR PARENTS Not only will we be addressing Internet dangers for your children, we will also be addressing the choking game and other physical dangers at next week’s Home and School meeting in Trainer Hall at 7:30. Our children are our future and our hearts and we, as adults, are commissioned to safeguard them.

Preceding that meeting we are holding an Information Night for new parents at 6:45 in Holy Family Hall. We planned them both on the same evening so that parents might come to our H & S meeting to get a sense of all the good people who make up our school community. After an administrative introduction, the Pre-K, K, and 1st Grade teachers will be in their classrooms until 7:30 to meet and greet these parents.

REVERENCE IN OUR CHURCH Although you would have read the insert in the church bulletin about this a few weeks ago, we didn’t know if you thought to keep the insert. It is such an important faith message that we were hopeful it would prompt family review and discussion and so have included it in this week’s envelope for you.

HOW DO YOU PACKAGE A BRAIN or WHAT DO YOU WEAR TO A CONVENTION? These are just a few of the things of which you’d be aware if you happened to be in our school last week. Our 6th Graders are studying the brain and its entire system with the spinal cord, etc. Outside of their science classroom are models of spinal cords, brains, etc. along with catchy bumper stickers and poems showing their knowledge of their science learning. They also packaged raw eggs a.k.a. brains to see which packaging would keep the egg safe. They learned what a great job God did in designing our skulls and our brain packaging.

Down in the 4th Grade, delegates to the convention considering the Declaration came dressed appropriately and let their class know more about themselves as delegates. Of course, Ben Franklin, the PA delegate, brought his kite! What grade level do you think of when you think graphing? Well, even our Pre-K does graphing to show information visually. It’s a given in K and 1st, of course. So much goes on in your children’s daily school life that we take in stride here but we realize that not all of you may be aware of it. Learning is a different ballgame, people. We try so hard to have our students take ownership of their learning and realize that critical thinking and good communication are crucial.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS Our Boys Basketball Varsity A Team won the Archbishop Ryan tournament on Jan. 18th for the second year in a row by defeating Nativity (Fishtown) in a double overtime. In addition, the team clinched 1st Place in our division last week in a game against St. Cecilia’s. Tonight the team begins Region I Play-offs at Somerton against St. Jerome’s. Go for it, boys! You have last year’s statewide game as incentive. Coached by Steve Devlin, Dan Jordan, and Greg Olenski, the team members are Brian Dones, Dan Kelly, Greg Olenski, Kevin Regan, Dennis Regan, Matt Hoch, Steve Jackson, Ed Mulholland, Matt Riloff, John Rizzo, Mike Rymal, and Matt Stahl.

We are proud of another student Kaitlyn Jester (5-13) who donated 12 inches of her hair to Locks of Love. Kaitlyn made have lost a foot of hair but she grew a foot in generosity. Thank you.

CRITICAL THINKING 101 Congratulations and our $10 Scrip of Choice certificate go out to Jack Raynor (2-2) whose correct entry was drawn. The combined numeric value of the vowels in the alphabet came to 76. For next week, what are the combined values of the consonants made up only of straight lines? This means counting letters like H or M but not B because it has some curves in it. Get it?

“Catholic Schools: Character. Compassion. Values.”

TRYING TO KEEP YOU INFORMED ISN’T ALWAYS EASY Just look at the papers in this week’s envelope! So much is going on around here that you need to know about. Our annual application period is here again and the letter with details about that is on the back of this newsletter. Information about 2006 tuition, evening mass for students, Market Day, Home and School activities, CYO Bingo, you name it is also in the envelope. Please be sure to look on both sides of fliers as we are encouraging that practice as a way of being good stewards and making it easier for you to review the contents.

CELEBRATING WHO WE ARE is easy with the wonderful students we have. At Sunday’s opening liturgy, we heard from 8th graders Samantha Kuhar and Jim Murphy on behalf of his friend Bruce Yhost the impact that Catholic education here at CSC has had on their lives. Yesterday we enjoyed more academic celebrating with two spelling bees. Monica Sucharski came in 1st and Michael Nitowski was the runner-up in the morning’s 4-5-6 bee. Both of them will prepare for an upcoming regional bee. Joe Geoghan was the 1st Place winner with John Rizzo runner-up in the afternoon’s 7-8 bee. These boys will be preparing for The Philadelphia Tribune Bee which sends the winner to Washington. Being in the limelight and in front of the student body can be intimidating but you wouldn’t have known it from the 24 students in the AM and 14 students in the PM’s demeanors. Good skills, huh? We work on them daily in our classrooms.

WHAT A NIGHT IT WAS! Monday night at Somerton was a happening when members of our 8th grade basketball teams played a game against members of our faculty at this 4th annual Catholic Schools Week event. It was quite a game both offensively and defensively as players on both teams raced up and down the court before the eyes of about 500 people. The cheering by fans and student and faculty cheerleaders inspired all the players as did the many clever signs displayed by the crowd. Just about the entire faculty participated as did the following students players: Megan Nardi, Beth Rymal, Kelly Clavin, Nick Foss, Julie Williams, Kevin Regan, Christine Gradel, Marisa Fiorentino, Shannon Dougherty, Maura Ruskowski, Kelly McGarry, Kelly Nocitra, Tracey McKeown, Samantha Kuhar, Greg Olenski, Brian Dones, Don Bradley, Dan Kelly, Matt Hoch, Matt Riloff, and Steve Jackson. Besides all the fun of the evening, we collected $509 to send to Amigo de Jesus to help the school being developed at the orphanage.

YOUR CALENDAR IS MARKED, ISN’T IT? Don’t forget that Friday is a faculty meeting and so there is no school for students. CYO Bingo Night held in Trainer Hall Thursday night will be even more fun knowing that there are no lunches to pack, etc. the next day. While you’re making calendar notes, jot down tonight’s Fashion Show meeting and that our own school parent Joey Callahan will be on television Friday AM. See the details for both on accompanying H & S paperwork.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS This past Saturday, the SCS Varsity Cheerleading Squad took part in their second competition of the season at Father Judge. Once again they won a 1st Place in the All-Around Category and came in 2nd in the general competition. If anyone has seen the Ford girls, Justina (8-18) and Julie (3-7), you may have noticed their attractive hair cuts. What you may not know is that the girls had their hair cut to be donated to Locks of Love. We are proud of you, Justina and Julie!

Kaitlin Demchuk (8-25) has been selected one of four winners from a field of over 400 in the Philadelphia Phantoms Third Annual Season Ticket Design Contest. Kaitlin’s drawing will be showcased on the season ticket being used this Friday, February 3rd against the Hershey Bears. In addition to that honor, Kaitlin will get to ride the Phantom’s zamboni that night. Well done, Kaitlin, and go Phantoms!

CRITICAL THINKING 101 This week’s $10 Scrip of Choice certificate goes to Kevin Brown (3-6) whose correct entry was drawn. He knew that you can spell that without any r’s. For next week, if each letter of the alphabet were assigned a corresponding numerical value as in a=1, b=2, c=3, etc., what would the combined value of all the vowels be including y?

WHO CAN EXPLAIN THE FEELING and the shared experience of adoring the Eucharist that was given to us last Wednesday evening? Although the evening was targeted for our CYO members, attendance was overwhelming and across the board from babies to seniors. The Capuchin Sisters choice of music was lively and moving as we prepared ourselves to welcome Christ fully into our midst. The sense of awe and reverence was palpable as everyone came forth to kneel before the Eucharist displayed in the monstrance and touch the cloak of Jesus. We can only wish that you and yours could have arranged to have been there.

LOOK ON THE BACK, LOOK ON THE BACK That’s our new mantra as we continue to try hard to be good stewards. H & S has started and we have too. Check out the back of this newsletter for the Catholic Schools Week schedule and in the future keep turning pages over in hopes that we are indeed double-dipping and saving money, paper and ultimately doing our part for the environment

WE’D LIKE TO ESPECIALLY RECOGNIZE THESE STUDENTS First of all, we’d like to share the names of the top four winners in each grade in the Science Fair competition judged by science professors from Philadelphia Community College. We will, of course, share the results of those two competitions with you.

PLEASE BE AWARE OF UPCOMING DEADLINE 05/06 Tuition Policy excerpt regarding continued enrollment in St. Christopher School after February 1, 2006: “First trimester report cards must have been released. Monthly tuition payments need to be current through January. For other payment plans, tuition must be paid in full.” Feel free to contact Maryann Junod in the parish office with any questions you may have.

…AND FINALLY FROM The MASTER Teacher “Ninth, parents can help their children by urging them to ‘think’—and expecting them to ‘think.’ After all, learning to think is a major part of being educated. This includes thinking before acting. It includes applying what is being learned. It means thinking continuously about ways to achieve, solve problems, and overcome obstacles. Education is about living a quality life.”

FAMILY AND STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES The Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia announces that need-based scholarship funds for Grades K to 5 are available by lottery to the first 3,000 applications. Go to www.csfphiladelphia.org for the application and information.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS Last Saturday, Jan. 20th, the SCS Varsity Cheerleading Squad went to their first competition held at St. Basil Academy. Crediting the hard work and dedication of their coaches in preparing them, the girls took 1st Place in the All-Around Category and 2nd in the Dance Category. In addition to the team awards, Delanie Lynch competed for the title of All-American Cheerleader and came in 1st Place in that. What a squad!

Congratulations to Dylan Cerebe (4-11)! Dylan won the Flyers’ Shoot-Out contest held during the Flyers’ game on the 19th. He will now advance to the semi-finals on Friday, February 10th. Go Dylan! Keep us posted.

CRITICAL THINKING 101 Congratulations to Manju Anthony (6-17) for having her correct entry drawn for this week’s $10 Scrip of Choice certificate. We asked for at least two words in the English language have the vowels in proper order in the word. Manju’s two words were abstemious and facetious which were the two most popular but there were a few others. Now, if we could only see these words used in writing and conversation.

For next week, “Railroad Crossings—Look out for the cars!” Can you spell that without any “R”s?

JANUARY 18, 2006

Catholic Schools: Character. Compassion. Values.

MONKS? SISTERS? WHO ARE THESE WOMEN? Be sure to ask your children about our visitors at school today. Hopefully, your children met them in their classrooms. We are likewise hopeful that ALL of our CYO members will be at Church this evening at 7 PM to hear the message these women are bringing precisely for them. All the coaches were asked to cancel any practice today so that students could be at home and preparing to be at Church by 7 for this momentous event so carefully planned by Fr. Phil. Parents too are encouraged to be present to hear the message. I know how excited the pastor and we here at school are about this opportunity. We’re looking forward to the evening.

PLAN TO SET SOME TIME ASIDE NEXT WEDNESDAY January 25th is a double-duty day here. Our students will be bringing home their second trimester progress reports and students in grades 4, 6, and 8 will also be bringing home their Terra Nova testing results. It is worthwhile and necessary for parents to sit with their children to talk about how the children’s strengths and weaknesses. Taking ownership of learning is crucial for each student. Learning, after all, belongs to the student and not to parents or teachers.

THOSE TRI-FOLD BOARDS COMING AND GOING are proof of how hard our students have been working on their science experiments and presentations. Science fair judging for boards from grades 5-8 will take place this Friday. All of the boards at every grade level will be on display for our Catholic Schools Week Open House Sunday January 29th. You will be impressed!

ACTION # 8 Here’s the next way from The MASTER Teacher that parents can help their students: “ Eighth, parents can help their children find success in school by reminding them to treat others as they would like to be treated. They can also make it clear that while the school exists to help them be successful, there are many other students who need to be successful too. That’s why parents should tell their children that showing respect and concern for others will improve their own chances of success. If students are concerned only with themselves, they will find the road to success harder.”

A PASSION FOR FASHION is what Chairperson Janine McNally has! She is passionate about making this spring’s H & S annual fashion show the best yet. To make that happen, Janine needs a strong committee to plan and prepare. Check out the accompanying flier for the Wednesday, Feb. 1st meeting details.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS Congratulations to the Somerton Under-10 Soccer Team who won the Department of Recreation Championship. St. Chris players include Clare Cochrane, Hannah Cochrane, Melissa Rizzo, Nora McWilliams, Taylor Adair, Caroline McAndress, Nicole Haselbarth, Shannon Harrington, and Nicole Zambito. Good job, girls!

It was not your everyday kind of cruise, that’s for sure. When a recent Carnival Cruise Liner set off for Mexico, The Pride of Erin dancers were on board to entertain the guests. Dancers from our school included Erin Wible, Victoria Grzyminski, Colleen Gentilcore, and Brianna Grzyminski. What a treat those cruisers had!

CRITICAL THINKING 101 The next number in sequence to be read the same upside down would be 8008 and Ryan Hearn (4-10) had his correct entry drawn for this week’s $10 Scrip of Choice certificate. For next week, name at least two words in the English language in which the vowels a, e, i, o, u appear in that same order although there are consonants interspersed with the vowels.

JANUARY 11, 2006

Ordinary Time in the Church Year has just begun. We know though that God’s time with us is never ordinary.

MONDAY IS A HOLIDAY In honor and remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Monday, January 16th, is a national holiday and our school too will be closed. People are called to service on this day to honor Dr. King’s memory and vision. For many of you, service to others is an on-going part of your life. It is a value that we encourage here at St. Christopher both in and out of school and in CYO activities.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK is a time-honored tradition celebrated throughout our nation each year. This year we will anticipate this special week beginning Friday, January 27th, and officially opening appropriately enough at our noontime Sunday liturgy January 29th and then continuing into the first days of February. We will be sending you the week’s schedule so that you can keep up with all the good things happening at this very special Catholic School of ours.

TIME FLIES… If it’s the New Year on the calendar, it means that it is soon time to think of the new 2006-2007 school year as well. We have begun planning for it here and we need to know how many families are applying to be at St. Christopher School before we consider new families who would like to send their children here. Therefore, we will be sending home application envelopes for you to share that information with us as well as including the $125 family annual application fee due between February 13th and 24th.

ACTION # 7 We are at the seventh of nine actions presented by The MASTER Teacher that parents can take to help their children.

“Seventh, to be successful in school, students must be able to work with others. That’s why parents must encourage their children to work at getting along with others—including classmates, younger and older students, teachers, counselors, administrators, and other adults. This one trait can heighten children’s success in school and be extremely important later in life. The truth is, if a student can’t work with others, school and career objectives will be limited.”

THE “GADGET LADY”? We all know her—if not in person—at least through all she does on behalf of our school. Information Science professor at Bucks County Community College Debra Geoghan is our Gadget Lady too although we never knew that was her nickname. Mrs. Geoghan designed and maintains our school website. It is because of her efforts that you are able to view teacher web pages each night, check the school calendar or handbook on-line, link to the Parish site, and so on. She also plays a very active role in helping with our technology program from hands-on maintenance and updating school computers to brainstorming on our Tech Committee. Her fifteen week consumer electronics course to begin at BCCC the end of the month will show students of all ages who choose to enroll how to use all their gadgets. Remember, we knew her when…!

PEOPLE AND EVENTS Last Thursday we held our local Knights of Columbus Free-Throw contest for students aged 10-14 years old. We’d like to thank all the students who competed and congratulate the winners who will compete on the next level Saturday, January 21st. The St. Chris winning girls are Christine Gradel, Shannon Harrington, Nora Jackson, and Megan Wolf. The boys are Kyle Constantine, Bill Dever, Tyler Donnelly, and Joe Ruskowski. Congratulations and good luck! We’ll keep you posted.

The Somerton Boys Nine Year Old Basketball Team won the Bob Snell Memorial Christmas Tournament. Coached by John Luciano, the St. Chris students are Casey Buck, Matt Cavanaugh, Jason Dones, John Luciano, Nick Pelbano, and Colin Wiercinski. Well done, boys!

CRITICAL THINKING 101 Wow, are your minds ever in full gear! We had so many correct entries for this drawing. Congratulations to Michelle Thomas (6-20) who will receive this week’s $10 Scrip of Choice certificate since her correct entry was drawn. When you multiplied the number by itself (squared it) and then added 1 to that, you got the next number in the sequence which is 17. For next week, let’s stay with numbers. “Below are five consecutive four-digit numbers that are the same right side up as they are upside-down. What is the next four-digit number in this sequence?”

1961    6009    6119    6969    ????

JANUARY 4, 2006

Rejoice, He is born! The long awaited Christ Child is with us!

A MOST HOLY AND HAPPY NEW YEAR is what the faculty hopes is in store for your family. Each new year is full of promise and potential and we hope that you realize both by letting your strong Catholic faith guide your actions and decisions.

OUR GOD IS AN AMAZING GOD! We returned to school in this brand new 2006 year on the feast of The Most Holy Name of Jesus yesterday. Today we came together as a school community in liturgy on the feast of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, and tomorrow we celebrate the feast of St. John Neumann. What a wonderful way for us to celebrate the season honoring the name of the newly born Jesus and then honoring two very special American saints who both spent their lives to see that children could and would be well educated in the Catholic faith. Let us always be amazed and activated by the ways God inspires us.

TUITION NIGHT IS ACTUALLY TONIGHT! If you are a school family using the semi-annual tuition payment plan, tonight is your tuition payment time from 6:30 to 7:45 PM in Holy Family Hall. Please remember that you needed to have redeemed your tuition vouchers prior to making payment.

You are asked to contact Maryann Junod at the Parish Center with any concerns noting the following excerpts from the tuition policy for continued enrollment after February 1st: “First trimester report cards must have been released. Monthly tuition payments need to be current through January. For other payment plans, tuition must be paid in full.”

…AND WHILE YOUR CHECKBOOK IS OUT If you are a family paying lunch fee by trimesters rather than in full in September, we need to remind you that we are now in the second trimester and your fee may be past due. Please send it in to Joan Kennedy in the school office. You may call her with any questions.

PARENT ACTION # 6 As promised we are continuing to share the nine actions given us in the publication The MASTER Teacher that parents can take. “Sixth, parents can help their children by urging them not to waste time and energy denying or rationalizing mistakes. Rather, children need to be reminded that mistakes result in learning. Parents can say, ‘We’re not going to blame you for making a mistake, but take a look at what you’ve learned from the mistake so that you don’t repeat it.’

“SHAVE AND A HAIRCUT, TWO BITS” We’re not really worried about the shave from that old rhyme but we do need to remind families about students whose hair needs cutting and/or combing each day. If your student’s hair is not according to school policy, please follow through ASAP. Like punctuality, good personal appearance and grooming are life habits that need to be fostered and developed. We hope that we will not find it necessary to keep taking reminder actions on our end.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS A big THANK YOU to the generous members of our CYO who participated in an evening of song and celebration with the residents of the Somerton Senior Center right before Christmas. With a police escort to guide them, over 100 of our young people along with parent chaperones made their way to the Somerton facility where they joyfully sang Christmas carols and visited with the residents. This time they were even accompanied by one of our talented youth on a saxophone! Before returning to Trainer Hall for hot chocolate and snacks, our CYO stopped by neighboring Cranaleith where they sang for the Sisters of Mercy. We are all very proud of this generosity and kindness that truly embodies the spirit of Christmas and again thank the CYO members and their chaperones under the inspirational leadership of Mrs. Giammaruti and Father Phil Florio, SJ.

We are excited about all the high school acceptances and scholarships that we are hearing about from our 8th Grade families. Please continue to send us official paperwork regarding these honors.

CRITICAL THINKING 101 For a chance to win the first $10 Scrip of Choice certificate in the new year, can you solve this one? “The numbers in each set have a relationship in common. Can you identify that relationship and find the missing number?”

2,5    3,10    9,82    5,26    4,___

IT’S A WRAP FOR 2005 Amazingly this is the closing newsletter of 2005 as our students—and faculty—anticipate the close of school this Friday at the end of the day knowing that we will not be returning until Tuesday, January 3, 2006. This time of year is a time of wonder for children and adults alike as we prepare for the Birth of Christ by sharing with each other the love He has for each of us. We pray that you too have a sense of that wonder as you bustle about with all the preparation that makes Christmas so special.

REMEMBER YOU CAN COME IN THE BACK DOOR AS WELL by being sure that you’ve included books and games that encourage critical thinking among your gifts for your children. Reinforcing/encouraging the joy of reading is easy. Providing video/computer games that are positive in what they portray might be challenging but as caring parents we are called to, in fact, mandated to do this for the sake of our children. There are, however, a myriad of games available that are fun and yet positive in what they promote. Don’t be seduced by popular opinion.

A BRIEF TUITION REMINDER AND REVIEW The first Wednesday in January, the 4th, tuition night takes place for families on the semi-annual payment plan in Holy Family Hall between 6:30 and 7:45 pm. Don’t forget to redeem your scrip prior to making payment. Contact Maryann Junod in the Parish Center with any concerns as you note the following excerpts from the tuition policy for continued enrollment after February 1st. “First trimester report cards must have been released. Monthly tuition payments need to be current through January. For other payment plans, tuition must be paid in full.”

THE FOURTH ACTION FROM THE MASTER TEACHER “Fourth, parents should stress organization and tidiness. This means keeping work and desks clean and orderly. The better students get at meeting this standard, the better their chance for academic success. Assignments, homework, notes, resources, and other academic work gain clarity and productivity through organization.”

A HOLIDAY SCHOOL BAG CHECK will give you some insight into the above action. How does your child’s school bag look? What’s in it? Are the folders organized and neat or are papers stuffed randomly and wrinkled? What do your child’s copybooks look like? Are pages set up neatly? Is the handwriting presentable? Is there drawing or graffiti, etc.? This is a good time of year for a re-organization strategy if needed.

PEOPLE AND EVENTS The Somerton Girls Under 11 Soccer Team won the Philadelphia Department of Recreation Championship this past Sunday. We’d like to congratulate the SCS students on the team: Sandy Aitken, Lindsey Johnson, Amanda Johncola, Erica Kopchinski, Courtney Bogan, Jenna Clavin, Bernadette Jackson, Nora Jackson, Emily Gaggiano, Kaitlyn Jester, and Colleen Young. Good going!

CRITICAL THINKING 101 Congratulations to Bryan Constantine (5-13) whose co
